Welcome back lovelies,
I know it has been quite a while since I have posted on here but as some of you probably noticed from my social media pages that I was spending my summer in the US so I just wanted to take a bit of time off to relax and enjoy the experience. However, I am back now and I am so excited to get stuck back into blogging as I have so many great posts planned for the next few months.
I decided at about Christmas time last year that I wanted to go on a J1 for the summer. After many hours sat in front of my laptop researching the best places to spend a summer, I concluded that San Diego was the spot for me. I registered through USIT to sign up for the J1 visa and started the process in January 2019. In all honesty, that was probably a bit too late to start the process as San Diego is such a popular spot that if you want to go there it is so hard to find jobs and accommodation that you would want to start the process a bit earlier. As much as I struggled to find work, I eventually found a job through USIT in an amusement park on the beach in San Diego. It was exactly what I wanted, I was absolutely thrilled.
One thing I will say, is that the process of getting the visa sorted is a lot harder and more expensive then I originally thought. You have to dedicate a lot more time and money to sorting everything out than I had planned for. Considering the fact that you have to have a job sorted before you even get to the U.S.A is really difficult because people usually want to meet you in person before they hire you, so if you don't pay for the more expensive USIT package, to find employment, I honestly don't know how people found jobs because I was sending out hundreds of emails and rarely ever even received a response from business' in San Diego.
I decided to go on my J1 alone, which honestly was the most nerve wrecking part of the entire experience. I did have a good few friends on J1's around other parts of the states and I also have family living in Boston so I did have other options of places to go, but I just had my sights set on San Diego so I thought I'd push myself out of my comfort zone and go alone. Honestly, it was the most terrifying thing that I have ever done but it was definitely the best possible decision that I could have made for myself. I think it pushed me so much to really get myself out there and meet new people and I think that I enjoyed it so much more because of it.
I joined a J1 San Diego Facebook group and found a group of girls that were looking for one more person to fill an apartment. It was the ideal situation. I communicated with one of the girls over Facebook for a few weeks while we were sorting the accommodation and they managed to find us a fantastic little apartment about 15 minutes from where we were working which was ideal. The only thing was that I was arriving in the States 2 weeks before them so I did have to make other arrangements beforehand which was actually fine and it allowed me to travel a bit of California before I started working.
I do want to do a more in depth post about all of the the questions that people have been asking me since getting home. But for my first post back I just wanted to do a bit of an introductory post first. What I will say though is that I did a good bit of travelling around the states and San Diego really and truly is the ideal spot to spend a summer. If you want the beautiful beaches, unbelievable nightlife and just fantastic people overall then San Diego is definitely the spot for you. It also has stunning surrounding areas and feels a lot safer than other parts of California.
I was lucky enough to make so many amazing friends for life while I was there and I honestly can't wait to go back there. I am definitely going to write more about the J1 and all of the places I travelled while I was there in the coming weeks so keep an eye out if you want to know more. If any of you have any questions about any of the process or even just about San Diego in general, feel free to dm me or you can comment below or message me through this website. I am more then happy to answer any of your questions.
Thanks for reading and if you haven't already subscribed please do it would mean the world.
All my love,
